Hollywood Insider: How to Spot a Casting Scam (From Someone Who’s Seen It All)
After 40 years in the film and television industry—from acting to producing—I’ve seen Hollywood change quite a bit. But one thing that never changes is the "hucksters" trying to take advantage of people's dreams.
Lately, I've noticed a surge in scams targeting seniors and background actors. If you are looking for your big break on shows like The Lincoln Lawyer or The Morning Show, here are the "Red Flags" you need to watch out for:
1. The "Pay-to-Play" Trap
The Rule: A legitimate casting director or talent agency will never ask you for money upfront.
The Scam: They ask for a "registration fee," "admin fee," or tell you that you must pay for their specific photographer to get headshots before they can represent you.
The Truth: Real agents make money only after you get paid, by taking a small commission.
2. The "Urgent" Text Message
The Scam: You get a random text message saying, "We need you for a virtual casting call for The Devil Wears Prada 2 tomorrow! Enter this code to confirm."
The Truth: Established casting agencies in Los Angeles don't recruit via unsolicited texts. They use professional platforms like Central Casting or Casting Networks. If they are rushing you to "act now" or share a security code, it is a scam.
3. "Guaranteed" Stardom
The Scam: "Join our $500 workshop and we guarantee you a role in a major production."
The Truth: Nobody in Hollywood can guarantee a role. Not even the best acting coach. If it sounds too good to be true, it always is.
4. The Email Address Check
The Rule: Always look at the actual email address, not just the name at the top.
The Scam: You get an email that says it's from "SAG-AFTRA" or a big studio, but when you click the name, the email is something like officialcasting77@gmail.com.
The Truth: Real industry professionals use their company domain (like @sagaftra.org or @paramount.com).
Stay safe out there! Your talent and your time are valuable—don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
